OverClock 3D - The word on the street about eye candy and high
resolutions is most definitively true. The single GPU of the standard HD4870
simply couldn't take these settings. At several spots as you can see from
the graph, I thought the card had locked up. Certainly not the case with
the HIS HD4870x2.
ATI Radeon HD 4870 Overclockin Guide Rev. 2.0
Tech ARP - Of course, this does
not mean we are not going to try overclocking the card. Even though the Radeon
HD 4870 will handily tackle practically every 3D game out there, there is still
a dragon left to slay and that dragon is called Crysis. The Radeon HD 4870
delivered an average frame rate of 38 fps at 1600 x 1200 and 32 fps at 1920 x
1200. Very good but it would be nice to have better frame rates, wouldn't it?
So, let's see how well the Radeon HD 4870 overclocks!
Dell Pre-Release Keyboard and Mouse Spyshots
Techware Labs - A new Dell mouse seems to be a shot across the bow for Logitech. The text around the sensor reads "LaserStream Technology" which is a trademark used by Agilent Technologies, a company that sold laser technology to Logitech. The Dell is has an LED indicating sensitivity and I can see this raising the bar for OEMs regarding input peripherals.
Should Myst be ported to the iPhone?
OSX Teality - "Since its
initial release Myst has been ported to multiple platforms, such as Windows,
PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. Although the game enjoyed great success
on PC, scoring a respectable 90% on Game Rankings, the same can't be said of
the handheld ports, scoring 56%/53% on the PSP/DS respectively, which raises
the question, where did the PSP/DS go wrong, and will the iPhone be doomed to
the same fate?"
ASUS Eee PC 2G Surf
Think Computer - Shortly after ThinkComputers published its
review of the ASUS Eee PC 2G Surf, the two gigabyte, initial version of the
mini-notebook, ThinkComputers owner Bob Buskirk tasked me with using it for a
few months and seeing what tricks I could do with it. This article goes in
depth about the initial ASUS operating system and installing and using
Eeebuntu's Net Book Remix edition."
Devil May Cry 4 - PC Review
Gamepyre - If you've played and liked Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core, then you will really have a blast playing through Devil May Cry 4. It is a beautiful game from just about every aspect. The story is well written, the voice acting is done fairly well, and the graphics are outstanding. The music can be debated; personally I liked it, but depending on your personal tastes, you might feel differently. The gameplay can also be debated as others may like it, or think its just some rehash...
Adobe Acrobat 9
Inside Hardware - “Adobe Acrobat made its first appearance in 1991, while
its PDF file format, from the start, was designed as multiplatform electronic
communication instrument. Appearance of Internet had significant influence on
future development of this format, thereby forcing Adobe to make even better
tool, which in time will become one of dominate methods of data exchange on the
Net, but at the same time they had to keep their role in professional printing
domain…”
Intel Atom Disk Encryption Performance
Phoronix - While the ASUS Eee PC 901 doesn't have its solid-state disk drives encrypted by default, if you are storing any potentially sensitive information on this netbook -- or any mobile device for that matter -- you really should encrypt the data. When you lose a mobile device or it has been stolen, it can be a nightmare if your banking information was stored on there or even just passwords to your Internet accounts. However, what is theperformance cost for fully encrypting a hard drive on one of these Intel Atom computers?
Asus Lion Square CPU Cooler Review
Hardware Logic - Asus is one of
the most respected companies by computer enthusiasts. Everyone knows them
more as a powerhouse in the motherboard industry but they do dabble in wide
range of hardware, including CPU coolers, like the Lion Square that we will be
examining today. At first glance it does seem like Asus is trying pack a
little bit of flare in a package that can hopefully keep up with top tier air
coolers on the market. Asus is apparently trying to present an
eye-catching product for enthusiasts that are looking for something beyond
the typical bland.
AMD's Best CPUs : AMD Clones Intel
Tom's Hardware - The year is 1981, and Intel (see our history of Intel processors
from a few months back) has just been chosen by IBM to supply the
processor for the first personal computer. IBM wanted at least two CPU
suppliers for its PC, and forced Intel to license its technology. And
so it was that AMD became one of the first companies to sell an 8086
clone. AMD’s first processor went on sale in 1982. Because it was a
licensed processor, the AMD 8086 (and 8088) was identical to Intel’s
model.
NVIDIA 9500 GT: Mainstream Graphics Update
Anandtech - Even though sub $100 hardware is very high volume, we don't often see a lot of heated debate surrounding them. People don't usually get excited about mainstream and low end hardware. The battle for who can run the newest game with the coolest effects at the highest resolution, while not applicable to most people, tends to generate quite a bit of interest. There is a lot of brand loyalty in this industry, and people like to see the horse they backed come out on top. Others, while not siding with a particular company, jump on the wagon with what ever company has the fastest part at any given time.
Gigabyte GA-X58-Extreme Intel X58
OCworkshop - At IDF, Intel released more information of the LGA1366 Nehalem Core i7. Today, we take a look at a upcoming board support this new processor.
The board, labeled Gigabyte GA-X58-Extreme is based on the Intel X58 chipset. It supports the upcoming new 1366pins i7 processor.
If you look at the board, it resembles the EP45 Extreme board. It uses a similar a heatpipe design with entry points for water cooling. There are various LEDs on board for overclockers on the system status.
Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) 2008
Virtual Hideout - This was my first
time this year and it was actually pretty darn interesting. VH has been known
to play a few FPS, RTS, RPG, MMORPG, and 0MFGSW33T type games. (Diceman loves
games that involve pure destruction and surrounding mayhem.) We all may not get
to play as much as we use to, but the gaming industry still proves to be the
vital force that motivates the likes of Nvidia, ATI, and Intel to bring us
faster Graphics cards which further perpetuates the creation of better video
games.
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H Motherboard
MB.org - I'm of two minds on the 790GX chipset in general. Yes this is the fastest integrated graphics on the market period. Yes, it features the new SB750 Southbridge which adds RAID 5 functionality to the chipset, and yes, the chipset supports CrossfireX in 2 x8 modes. The problem becomes what is it competing against at the $150 price point? The 780G chipset offers many of the same features besides ACC as the new GX one does, but it has a lower clock speed. Is it better to save the $60 and buy a discrete graphics card to get better overall performance?
Xigmatek NRP-HC1001 1000w
[H]ardocp - The Xigmatek brand is one of the newer faces in the enthusiast DIY market having been launched in 2005. However, Xigmatek’s parent company may be more familiar to the storage minded individuals as Micro Technology Concepts, Inc. or MTC Direct which has been around since 1989. With the establishment of the Xigmatek brand Micro Technology Concepts, Inc. has expanded into some new niches as they now brand products that include CPU coolers, VGA coolers, fans, and power supplies.
