Topic: Heatsinks
Product: Aero Cool GT-1000 Heatsink
Supplied By: AeroCool.US
Date: 4-20-05
Reviewer: K. Elliott

When I was reading the specifications for the fan and heatsink there was one line in the description that really got my attention, the line I am referring to is the one that states the fins are "Gold Plated".  Well we know that gold does conduct heat better than copper so it does make sense but lets hope the amount of gold used is small enough that you won't need a vault for your computer. By the way that was a joke.  So I must also assume the exterior of the heatpipes are gold-plated as well or perhaps just a finely polished copper. Either way the design of the gold has played a major part in the design of the packaging for GT-1000 as well with the carton having more gold on it than Goldfinger can shake his finger at.

Aerocool has a remarkable job of providing a wealth of information about their product on a box that measures only 10" x 4" x 7" and still has enough room left over to place a full-size picture on the front of the carton and pictures of the installation methods used for the various platforms the GT-1000 fits on.

If I could pack for a vacation like Aerocool packed this heatsink I could get all my thinks in one suitcase.  Thanks to very carefully design work they are able to stow away all of the brackets, a backer plate, a tube of thermal paste, hardware package, and a single fan all in one single hole on one side of the carton while the other half holds the heatsink itself. See what I mean by a great job of packaging?

The one thing I noticed about the GT-1000 is that is not a heavy as some of the heatpipe heatsinks we have reviewed in the past, even with 3 pipes it still does have some heft to it don't me wrong but it is not a socket ripper like some we have tested in the last month or so.  At 85 grams it is still not a heatsink you would want to lug off to a LAN party of one that you would want to go bagging your computer about with it hanging off the side of your motherboard either.

The heatsink is basically made up of three separate pieces, the first ones being the 36 gold plated fins which are spaced 3mm apart and are pressed on to the tubes of the heatpipes.  The second part is housing that surround the outside edges of the fins, this housing also serves as a mounting point for the 7-blade 92mm fan. The frame also can be mounted with a fan on each side in the push-me-pull-me configuration, but our tests have shown that this makes very little difference in the heatsinks overall performance.  The last item Aerocool refers to as the "Extruded Bit", it the small fins object that rests on top of the base of the heatsink.
