Introduction
Before building my DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-DR system I had read about how picky these motherboards were about the power supplies they used and how they would either fail to post or have a malady of other problems if the power supply was not up to snuff.  Some people said they had gotten their systems to operate using a power supply that had only a 20-pin power connector while others swore by the fact that a 24-pin connector was needed or you were doomed to failure.  Then the talk turned to how much current was an acceptable amount on the 12-volt rail, once again some had said they had gotten by on power supplies putting out as little as 18 amps while the the majority claimed you needed a bare minimum of 24 amps.

So I installed what I thought was a pretty good power supply, after all it was rated at 550 watts but it only had a 20-pin power connector, guess what happened?  You're right the system would not even boot up.  So I pulled that power supply and installed the next one which happen to have a 24-pin power connector but it was only rated at 350 watts.  The system booted fine but when I got to checking the voltages with Motherboard Monitor every rail was drooping so bad I immediately shut down and pulled it out.  The final power supply I install and the one I had confidence in had dual 12 volt lines one with 18A the other with 15A, it also had a 24-pin power connector and when I remember when I reviewed it was rock solid on with all voltages. Upon starting the system everything went without a hitch and checking the voltages showed it to be rock steady.

So what was in this system I was trying to operate?  4 - 120mm fan (3 to radiator one to exhaust), 1 - water pump, X850XT, 2 - NEC DVD/RW, 2 - 2 - Hitachi 7K500 RAID 0, 2 GB Crucial BallisticX.  In other words it had a bit of a load on the power supply.  Yet my system by today's standards is not that over the top, there are many more out there that are far better than this and require more power than mine and that is why a top quality power supply should be one of the first things you purchase when designing a new system.

Which brings us to the power supply we are reviewing today, the Hiper HPU-4M480 should be an interesting  power supply to review since it does have all of the qualifications that we would have wanted in the unit we installed in our system. So lets get with it and take a look and what it has to offer and what it looks like inside.
