Conclusion

If there is one fault with the Thunder 550 power supply it has to be the small heatsinks and lack of large and multiple filter capacitors used in the unit.  The unit does perform within tolerances using an above average system as the test bed. During our testing the 120mm fan was so quiet that we had to check to make sure that it was actually spinning.

One thing that I am afraid will happen with the external power connection is someone will think that they can plug their USB drive into the connector and be able to read the data on the USB drive.  Thus they forget the the USB connector is purely there to power devices and not to read data from a drive.
