Item: I/O Magic 8x4x2 DVD±RW External USB Burner

Test Setup
Motherboard: Abit AA8 Duramax
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 - 3.4 GHz
Memory: 2 GB Corsair TWIN2X1024-4300C3PRO
Cooling: Swiftech H20 120 Water Cooling Kit
Storage: 2 - Hitachi 500 GB SATA 150 RAID 0
PSU: AeroCool Zero DBA

To test the speed of the drive what we did was setup a copy of Alcohol 120, and then placed a DVD which had 3.87 GB of data on it into the I/O Magic DVD Burner. We will then start Alcohol 120 and create a mirror image of the DVD onto our hard drive.  Once that is complete we will burn the image onto a blank DVD to record the amount of time that it takes.

Thanks to the 7,200 rpm hard drive with 16 MB cache the total time to create the image was relatively short.  Creating the image in our simulation shows that the I/O Magic DVD Burner will take approximately 26 minutes and 2 seconds to burn our 3.87 GB image.  It should be noted that the actual time to burn the image was only 22 minutes and 52 seconds, we're not sure why there was such a difference in the simulation and the actual burn speed.

The I/O Magic DVD Burner does exactly what it says it will do and it does one thing that a normal DVD player doesn't do, and that is become portable by simply unplugging the USB cable and the power cord.  This small feature alone allows you to insure that every computer in your house can have access to a DVD player.  One of the things that I have used a portable DVD player in my home for is to limit the types of games my children can install on their computer.  Without a built-in DVD player in their system even when a friend brings a game over there is no way for them to install it into their computer.

It's also handy if you happen to have a house full of company and the adults want to watch one DVD and the kids want to watch another, you can move the I/O Magic External DVD Player to a computer and hook it up and they can watch their movie in a separate room.

Yes this unit is slightly out of date with the newer drives burning at speeds up to 8x, but the reason we reviewed this product is we wanted to show you the nice type of gear that is available at our sponsor Geeks.com.  Their selection does not stop at merely DVD-burners either, they have everything imaginable when it comes to your computer and electronic needs.  Some of it is new merchandise, other is re-furbished but all of it is first class gear and best of all the prices are great and the warranties are even better.  Check them out and see what you have been missing.
